For a long time I worked for the railways as an incident response manager, attending lorries hitting bridges, sheep on the track, floods and so on, with the aim of minimising delay to trains. Basically, I fixed problems. However, I realised that I was not going to get on in a large corporate environment. I just don't like office politics enough, ironic for someone who did a Politics degree at Newcastle Uni! So in 2012 I quit and spent the Summer enjoying the rain and the Olympics.
Now I do a job I really enjoy and which gives me a lot of satisfaction. I consider myself very well versed in building maintenance with particularly good knowledge of carpentry and plumbing, though I like putting my mind to a new challenge. I am moving towards doing longer jobs where they use beautiful natural materials to create sustainable buildings. Look at www.handyguybuilds.co.uk for full details on this work.
You can read my testimonials on the trade site myBuilder, and I also have positive feedback on netmums. Or, you can read this from Stuart Cooper- I rennovated his whole house before he moved to Warwick:
Generally I charge by the hour and do not quote unless the job is more than a couple of days work. That said, I can certainly provide an estimate once we have discussed your requirements.
My labour is billed at £60 for the first hour and £15 per half hour after that for each visit. My minimum charge is 1.5hrs / £75. My day rate is £240 for 8 hours.
I do not mark up my materials so you get those at trade price (typically 10-20% below retail price) but if I have to go to suppliers to get materials specifically for your job that is billable time. Any parking charge are billed for.
Payment is due immediately on the completion of work and can be paid by BACS, debit card, credit card (with a small fee) or in cash. For larger jobs payment is by instalment. If you require a receipt just say.
I do not dispose of waste from the job unless this had been discussed in advance and budgeted for (I am charged trade rates on waste).
I can supply my full terms and conditions before the start of work.
I am delighted to be able to recommend HandyGuy services. Over the past few months Guy has been leading the effort to renovate our new family house in Warwick. He has completed a wide range of carpentry, electrical, repair and decoration tasks with confidence and care.
He has listened careful to our needs and acted with great initiative throughout. His has shown sound judgement in making decisions on our behalf. This has been tremendously helpful as we live in Cambridge and are largely coordinating by telephone. He has proved a trusted source of advice and an extremely conscientious worker. He has sourced and managed other trades as the project required, significantly reducing our stress and cost.
He has exceeded our expectation of what a handyman role can offer. Although adaptable, he is clearly not a 'jack of all trades' - all his results have been to the highest standard. To our delight he has frequently gone the extra-mile to keep things on track, working weekends and extra hours as the project demanded. I shall be delighted to use his support in future projects and am already recommending HandyGuy to friends and family. Bravo Guy and thank you!
